The Public Works Department maintains a staff of three people responsible
for preventative maintenance on the Town's water system, and a Water Operator
who performs tests on the water quality as required by the state and federal
law. For maintenance problems such as leaks or water quality, please
contact Public Works at (928) 333-4223. Public works will respond to correct
the problem, but is not permitted to enter into private property. After hours,

For an installation of a water meter and
connection to the Town system, the homeowner must complete an application
for service at Town Hall, pay the fees, and then a connection date will be
scheduled. Please allow three weeks for an installation. Click
here for a complete listing of the water and sewer fees. Residents
with an existing connection wishing to turn on their water must contact
Town Hall, and usually within the same day, Town Hall will schedule the
turn on with Public Works, and a technician will arrive to
turn on the water. If the water is not turned on when the meter is
installed, then a turn-on charge will be assessed. For seasonal visitors,
half the usual turn-on fee is assessed (the meter is kept in the owner's
name, the account is kept open, and the meter is temporarily turned off
during the winter.) To transfer the water account in an existing home, a
turn-on fee is also assessed.

Approximately half of the Town's residences are connected to the sewer
system, and long-range plans call for the extension of the sewer and water
system to other areas of the Town, to be funded by water-use fees. On a
daily basis, the Town has a 1-2 person crew performing preventative
maintenance of the Town's sewage collection system. This maintenance
includes cleaning lines, manholes, and performing sewer service repairs.
Residents can contact Public Works regarding backups, but please note that
the crew can work only up to the cleanout, provided that the cleanout is
not on private property. There is no fee to check out a backup, but if the
problem resides on the resident's side, the resident is responsible.
The Town's Waste Water Treatment Plant handles 250,000 gallons per day,
with a capacity expandable to a half million gallons per day. Effluent is
sent out at no cost as a reuse for local hay farmers, and with the recent
acquisition of an aquifer protection permit, the Town is making plans to
improve the quality of the effluent so that it may be used in other
capacities (such as irrigation or water recharge).
Septic system inspections are handled by the County. Residents using
this method for disposal of wastewater should contact Apache County for
permits and assistance.

The Town repairs street signs and paved roads on an as-needed basis. A
road maintenance blading program has been established, but residents can
contact Public Works for maintenance blading of unimproved roads. Public
Works will do its best to schedule a crew to respond within a day,
however, please note that this is depending on the crew's existing
workload.

A facilities maintenance crew works to cleanup road right-of-way areas,
and the grounds of public properties, such as the parks, cemetery, and
Town Hall. The Town utilizes labor from the Inmate Work Program from the
Apache Unit of the Dept of Corrections Prison, in maintenance and construction work for all the Public Works programs.
The crew typically consists of a Public Works Supervisor specially trained
by the Arizona Department of Corrections, and a crew of 5 day laborers, who
come from the minimum-security prison, and have been carefully screened before
being allowed to work on cleanup and maintenance projects. The Town
utilizes these work crews to minimize the cost of labor, but frequently
these workers provide welding, concrete work, and carpentry skills.
